SNOWBOARDER OVER TUMALO FALLS

Yes, you see a snowboarder jumping over Tumalo Falls. I could write a small book on the image you see here. One of my favorite parts of the job is to design and build snow features, wherever, whenever there is snow. I've built countless features and spent hundreds of days in cities in Europe to Canada to Omaha Nebraska to my hometown of Bend Oregon. There are a lot of limiting politics to working in cities; police, property owners, etc...it's exciting but can put a damper on how and when you can work if someone isn't happy about what you are doing.  The other side of the spectrum is building in the backcountry, where the only limit is Mother Nature and human capabilities. This photo is neither the backcountry nor a city, it's an iconic tourist spot 14 miles outside of where I live. I've wanted to build a jump over the 97' waterfall ever since I laid eyes on it many years before this actually happened. There is no max coefficient for snow, so you have to know what you are doing from years of trial and error...there was zero margin for error on this design. Dru Brownrigg was the only snowboarder on hand. I told him the night before to bring a bright top so he would show up in the video/photo. He hit the jump and radioed down to me, "how does the photo look?" I said, "it looks great, but you didn't wear a bright top and it's hard to see you." He put on the yellow hoodie you see here, hit the feature one more time and was done...he had never been so scared in his life. I'm grateful I never have to set this up again.  If you ever wanted an image to captivate any viewer of any age, this is it.
